The paper analyses the space appropriation by the public and private actors in the Brazilian Amazon coastal zone. In particular, the article examines the use and appropriation of the territory that covers the Atalaia Island, located in the municipality of Salinopolis, Pará state. The Atalaia Island concentrates a diversity of socio-spatial practices that stress complexes relationships of spatial reproduction carried out by social actors within diverse interests and power. Methodologically, the research which this paper derivates was based on documental analysis, observation, semi-structured interviews with local social actors and specialised professionals, and also elaboration of maps and drat-images. The article shows that territory occupation without legal concerns brings as consequence the irregular and private use of the space what contradicts the conception for public use of coastal islands
