This article aims to identify the effigy found on a tomb that lies along the south wall of St Mary’s Church on Rothesay. The author recounts the various identities that have been proposed for this effigy but discounts them. He then goes on to use the principles of heraldry to propose that this tomb was made for Robert II during his lifetime, possibly while he was the Earl of Strathearn. An addendum is also attached to the article in which the author refutes objections to his argument.   Meeting notes for July 13, 1857 are appended. At this meeting a communication from the Board of Manufacturers was read, regarding rooms they had set aside for the Society’s museum.
