In the context of the proposal that the Wallace monument should include a statue of Wallace himself, the author discusses several portraits that supposedly depict William Wallace. He concludes that none of the portraits of Wallace he has described are old enough to be called a fair likeness. A note at the end of the article mentions two further portraits that came to the attention of the author before publication, but neither of these are considered contemporary either.
