Maximal oxygen consumption (VO 2max ) is an important measure of cardiorespiratory capacity of an individual at a given degree of fitness and oxygen availability. Risk of cardiovascular diseases increases with increasing degree of obesity and a low level of VO 2max has been established as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular mortality.
