Nepal is an endemic area with regards to iodine deficiency, as well as a nutritional iodine deficiency is thought to be prevalent in all the Himalayan, sub-Himalayan and the Terai regions of Nepal. Thyroid dysfunction is a major public health problem among the Nepalese population.
