Attitudes and Opinions Of Anatolian Teacher High School Students Toward Teaching Profession Courses

The aim of this quantitative and qualitative study is to determineattitudes and opinions of 11th grade students of Anatolian TeacherTraining High Schools toward Teaching Profession Courses. In thiscontext, we aimed to see if students’ attitudes toward TeachingProfession Courses differed related to gender, study field, havingteacher in the family, income level of the family, education level ofmother and father. In qualitative part of the study, it was aimed todetermine the reasons why students preferred studying AnatolianTeacher Training High Schools and the efficiency of these schools inpreparing the students for teaching profession. Population of the studyincludes 11th grade students enrolled at eight Anatolian TeacherTraining High Schools in 2010-2011 academic year. All 11th graderswere chosen as the sample of the study. Data of the study werecollected by using a 32-item Likert type scale and an interview formincluding four semi-structured questions. Cronbach Alpha reliabilitycoefficient of the scale was calculated to be 0.93, Spearman-Browncorrelation coefficient was measured to be 0.92, Guttman split-halfvalue was calculated to be 0.88 and these results proved that the scalewas both valid and reliable. Independent groups t test, varianceanalysis, Kruskal-Wallis H and Scheffe tests were used to analyze thedata. With the study, it was determined that students’ attitudes werenegative towards Teaching Profession Courses. It was also determinedthat the students did not want to be a teacher in the future and theywanted to perform a different profession. Besides, the studentsstressed that they did not like Teaching Profession Courses, demandedreducing content and teaching hours of these courses. They alsoemphasized that they did not enjoy studying these courses; they wouldnot study if they were not compulsory and studied just for passing theclass. It was determined that the students did not enjoy searching thesubjects dealing with Teaching Profession Courses and found thesecourses boring as well. Nicel ve nitel araştırma desenleri kullanılarak yürütülen bu araştırmanın amacı Anadolu Öğretmen Liselerinde öğrenim gören 11. sınıf öğrencilerinin Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi derslerine ilişkin tutumlarını ve görüşlerini belirlemektir. Bu bağlamda öğrencilerin Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi derslerine yönelik tutumlarının cinsiyetlerine, öğrenim gördükleri alana, ailelerinde öğretmen olup olmama durumuna, ailelerinin gelir düzeylerine, anne ve babalarının eğitim durumuna göre değişip değişmediğini ortaya koymak amaçlanmıştır. Araştırmanın nitel boyutunda ise öğrencilerin Anadolu Öğretmen Lisesinde öğrenim görmeyi istemelerinin nedenlerine, bu okulların öğrencileri öğretmenlik mesleğine hazırlamadaki yeterliğine ilişkin görüşlerinin neler olduğu ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Araştırmanın çalışma grubunu 2010–2011 eğitim-öğretim yılında, sekiz Anadolu Öğretmen Lisesinin 11. sınıflarında öğrenim gören öğrenciler oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmanın örneklemi olarak bu okullarda öğrenim gören 11. sınıf öğrencilerinin tümü alınmıştır. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından hazırlanan 32 maddelik Likert tipi bir tutum ölçeği ve yarı yapılandırılmış dört sorudan oluşan bir görüşme formu ile toplanmıştır. Ölçeğin Cronbach Alpha güvenirlik katsayısı 0.93, Spearman-Brown korelasyon katsayısı 0.92, Guttman split-half değeri ise 0.88 hesaplanmış ve bu hesaplamalar sonucunda da ölçek güvenilir bulunmuştur. Verilerin analizinde bağımsız gruplar t testi, varyans analizi, Kruskal-Wallis H ve Scheffe testleri kullanılmıştır. Araştırma ile öğrencilerin Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi derslerine yönelik tutumlarının olumsuz olduğu, çoğunun ileride öğretmenlik mesleğini yapmayı düşünmedikleri ve farklı bir meslekte çalışmak istedikleri belirlenmiştir. Buna yanı sıra öğrenciler Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi derslerini sevmediklerini, ders içeriklerinin azaltılması ve ders saatlerinin düşürülmesi gerektiğini vurgulamışlardır. Öğrenciler bu derslere çalışmaktan zevk almadıklarını, zorunlu olmasa çalışmayacaklarını ve sadece sınıfı geçmek için çalıştıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Ayrıca öğrencilerin Öğretmenlik Meslek Bilgisi dersleri ile ilgili konuları araştırmaktan hoşlanmadıkları ve bu dersleri sıkıcı buldukları sonucuna ulaşılmıştır
