This paper presents a study on how sustainability indicators are used in order to monitor Brazilian local productive systems (APL) in tourism. APL are considered to be strategic policies for increasing sustainable development in local and regional scales through the integration among small firms. The research, based on secondary data, analyzed ten APL initiatives managed by Sebrae (Brazilian Service of Support for Micro and Small Enterprises) available for public access in the project monitoring system called SIGEOR. Four categories were considered: data, interface, local and scope. The main conclusion is that APL monitoring instruments generally provide little support for the strategy of sustainability, since the objectives, results and indicators refer mostly to economic dimensions instead of including social, environmental, political or institutional aspects that are essential to sustainability
