Betweenthe mid-1980s and the present day, conservation biology split into twoalmost independent fields: management ecology and conservationecology. We have witnessed the recovery of large endangered speciesand a decrease in small and common species. In addition, theabandonment of rural areas has allowed the expansion of forest speciesand has hurt those that inhabit open spaces and who are linked totraditional farming. Many species that once lived only in refuges arenow starting to venture further out and are losing their fear ofhumans. Moreover, environments that have become anthropomorphised arenow being successfully occupied more often. In short, we are goingtowards a world that reconciles humans and wildlife, which will bebeneficial, but will also pose newchallenges.
