This article presents a Luhmannian perspective of the internet. The first section summarizes the contributions of German sociologist Niklas Luhmann and outlines the theoretical boundaries between the theory of social systems and that of media studies. The second section addresses the Internet and offers some preliminary concepts, derived from a social system’s perspective, to understand this medium as an autopoietic system. This section will describe internet communication through four sociocybernetic concepts: serialization, netclustering, selection and nodes.
