Charlotte Dorothea Biehl was one of the most productive Danish writers in the 18th century. Furthermore, she was the only female novelist of her time who managed to make a living by writing. She has been highly disregarded throughout this century despite her exceptional position in Danish literary history. Through a literary deconstruction of the comedy "Den listige Optrækkerske", this article demonstrates to what great extent Biehl criticized contemporary gender ideas. Also, Biehl renewed the comedy genre through the way she chosed to end "Den listige Optrækkerske". All this makes Biehl and her work an interesting chapter, not only in women's literary history, but in Danish literary history in general.
