Henrik Smith-Sivertsen: Sexy American pop or sentimental schlager – A Danish survey on popular music 1961.   In this article the author uses a Danish questionnaire from august 1961 to examine the position of popular music in Danish musical- and cultural field in the early 1960’s. The questionnaire was targeted specifically at popular music and the results were published in a newspaper later that year. In the original presentation of the results the main conclusion was that the younger part of the population preferred music in English rather than Danish. These presumptions were generally shared in the early 1960’s, and seem to have been an underlying premise in radio programming in the following years leaving only little space for Danish popular music. In the article these interpretations are being questioned following an analysis of all original answers.
