Thirty years after its discovery, high critical temperature superconductors have confirmed the operation cost saving compared with the low temperature superconductors. Their properties have improved significantly, both in current transport capability and available length. However, their applications are not spread. Why? The main reason is that their cost is not competitive yet. In this review, the reasons behind this situation are analyzed, together with the perspectives for the coming years. Keywords: superconductors, high critical temperature superconductors, superconductor applications, high magnetic fields
