The purpose of the article is to present a historiographical balance of the Russian tobacco studies in the long term, from the seventeenth century Muscovy up until the end of the Russian Empire in 1917. Tobacco studies are understood as the legislation, the regions of cultivation, the production and trade, the revenues, etc., within the afore-mentioned period. The paper classifies the bibliography by the country’s origin and in chronological order, revealing the works of the Russian Imperial scholars, Soviet researchers, contemporary Russian authors and foreign researchers. The article intends to organize the information already published and to set forth approximate directions for future research.
