Water systems have developed procedures for authorizing fire hydrant use. The goal of these procedures is to limit use to individuals who've been trained or are known to the water system. Most systems have operational policies or city ordinances that describe the permit system, fees, and penalties. The article lists some commonly included elements of hydrant‐use policies, which may differ according to site‐specific factors and unique community issues. Water system integrity is improved by providing training for hydrant users and controlling access with a well‐designed use‐permit system, hydrant locks, and internal backflow prevention devices that include a check valve.
