Abstract: The autobiography of childhood is taken in this article as one ofthe most innovative literary representations of intimacy in that it impliesthe imaginary reconstruction of a childhood self that no longer exists butinhabits as a ghost the memory of the adult. This ghostly presence adoptsdifferent forms in the childhood autobiographies of Annie Ernaux andLuis Landero, whose writing explore the ongoing persistence of feelingsof shame (in the former) and guilt (in the latter), and the difficulty in remembering and expressing those feelings.
