Open AccessA mediados del siglo XIX se produjo una importante transformación en la visión de los católicos españoles respecto de la novela. De considerarse un género corruptor de la sociedad y especialmente peligroso para las mujeres, pasó a valorarse como un mecanismo útil para moralizar las costumbres. Este cambio coincidió con el surgimiento de una corriente antiliberal en el seno del Partido Moderado: el neocatolicismo. Este trabajo pretende ofrecer una interpretación de la novela neocatólica a través de las herramientas metodológicas que ofrece la categoría de género. Así, se analizarán los modelos de feminidad y masculinidad presentes en cuatro novelas representativas del periodo y se relacionarán con el proyecto social y político del neocatolicismo: la recristianización de la sociedad.
Abstract
During the mid-nineteenth century, many Catholics significantly transformed their opinion of the novel. They moved from considering it to be a genre that corrupted society and was especially dangerous for women, to valuing it as a useful mechanism for moralizing customs. This change coincided with the appearance of an illiberal stream in the Moderate Party: Neo-Catholicism. The aim of this paper is to study the Neo-Catholic novel through the methodological tools supplied by the category of gender. Thus, the article will analyse the femininity and masculinity models that can be found in four representative novels of this period, which will be connected to the social and political project of Neo-Catholicism: the re-Christianization of society.
