This paper discusses the role that State patronage, art criticism, the relative importance of different painting styles and the birth of the artist/intellectual played in the evolution of 19th century Spanish painting. This resulted in a new artistic order that differed from the one previously in use and from the one that followed in the 20th century. The paper argues that understanding this organisation is essential in order to approach 19th century artistic production.
