Después del entusiasmo inicial, la guerra, enlazada con numerosas turbulencias políticas y sociales, hicieron reflexionar los líderes del proceso sobre los alcances reales que el proyecto podía tener. Simón Bolívar es un ejemplo claro de ello. La reorganización de la república venezolana, y especialmente sacudida por las guerras raciales e interregionales, y después la creación de Colombia, empujó su pensamiento a la búsqueda de un punto medio que garantizara a la república y muchas de las libertades, pero en un entorno de orden. Muchos vieron en sus intenciones un monarquismo embozado, no obstante lo que se tenía en frente era el nacimiento del pensamiento conservador hispanoamericano.
The establishment of a liberal and republican political system in Spanish America brought about theoretical and administrative difficulties. After the initial enthusiasm, war and numerous social turbulences had an effect on the way political leaders thought upon the real achievements that the project could obtain. Simon Bolivar is a clear example of this. The reorganization of the Venezuelan republic –particularly shaken by racial and regional confrontations- and the establishment of Columbia, reflect the way Bolivar pushed his ideas towards a middle ground in which freedom and the existence of the republic were guaranteed in an environment of order. Many judged these intentions as a veiled form of monarchy. Nevertheless, this was actually the birth of Spanish-American conservative thought.
