In the beginning there was water. Then there were people. Then people started to manage water. Then people (22, to be exact) created the American Water Works Association (AWWA) in 1881 as a way to share best practices on how to manage water. Then, 50 years ago, with the desire to rely less on judgment and more on scientific facts, the people of AWWA created a research foundation. On Dec. 5, 1966, with an investment of $34,000, AWWA launched the AWWA Research Foundation, commonly known as AWWARF. (It is now known as the Water Research Foundation or simply WRF.)
