Assessing the 19 major drinking water regulations published since 1975, the water sector has made great progress in reducing the vast majority of the larger drinking water risks. There will always be some debate about risks and the underlying uncertainties in risk assessments, but many significant risks have been greatly reduced. The total risk reduction in drinking water from these 19 regulations is not often recognized because of the technical challenges in comparing risks.
