Sewers and wastewater systems have the compounded problem of being out of sight and thus out of mind. The public operates dishwashers and washing machines, flushes toilets, and takes showers, all without realizing that each and every building is connected to sewer pipes, which are in turn part of a massive system that collects and treats the public's wastewater. Whether seeking approval for new technology for infrastructure projects, rate increases, or stormwater management through green infrastructure, it is all about public buy‐in. Without it, it is much harder for water utilities to accomplish their goals.
