Water utilities in Germany and many other Northern European countries are being confronted with significant decreases in drinking water demand. This is not a short‐term problem and the reasons are diverse, but the consequential challenges are manifested in a rather simple problem: the cost and revenue structures are not aligned. Today German utilities face substantial revenue losses.
