Before the era of smart phones and instant messaging, information was difficult to come by and required manual, hands‐on efforts to first gather the data and then process it to create some form of intelligence that could be used by decision‐makers. Although to a degree the water industry may still rely on some customer feedback, utilities have made huge strides in developing early warning systems to monitor not only their water reliability and quality, but also their financial and operational performance.
