South Africa and Chile have always had close military and diplomatic ties butcomparatively little is known in South Africa about Chilean military history. Chile'snaval history in particular is most interesting and as obviously in the 18th centurythe only practical means of travel to and around South America was by sea, hernavy has played a very important historical role.
