The objective of this work was to evaluate the vegetative growth of the shoots of corn plants, in chemical attributes of the soil in function of the application of excessive doses of gypsum, independently of criteria of recommendation of correctives. The experiment was house vegetation, during the months of April to May of 2005. Doses of gypsum: 0, 0,5, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 t.ha-1. The soil was fertilized with 150 mg.dm-3 of P, 120 mg.dm-3 of K and 25 mg.dm-3 of N. The shoot growth of the corn plants answered positively to the gypsum. The addition of gypsum, with doses of up to 32 t.ha-1, it doesn't reduce the acidity it activates and the potential acidity of the soil. The gypsum increases the of Ca of the soil, however with expressive increments only starting from 4 t.ha-1 of gypsum. The readiness of Mg of the soil is reduced due to the gypsum. The SO42- of the soil they are increased in until 1000% with the addition of 4 t ha-1 of
