T he 2017 MJA Indigenous health issue explored the social determinants of health that are essential to closing the gap between health outcomes for Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians, specifically targeting cultural awareness and communication. The issue also placed recent gains in the life expectancy of Indigenous Australians in perspective, and recognised achievements by an often silent yet dedicated clinical community.
