gested a renal interstitial pathology, ofwhich drugs are a common cause. There seemed to be no other disease; in particular, diabetes was excluded. To November 1995 the Adverse Drug Reactions Advisory Committee recorded three Australian reports of omeprazole-associated acute interstitial nephritis and there have been similar overseas reports.!-4 To the end of May 1996 the committee recorded seven reports ofbiopsyproven interstitial nephritis, nine reports of acute renal failure and eight other reports of renal function impairment. As omeprazole is particularly effective in reflux oesophagitis, its use is likely to increase. Wider appreciation of this uncommon serious side effect is necessary.
