These guidelines by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) provide brief step‐by‐step outlines of the management of common life‐threatening emergencies in infants and children. The guidelines are similar, but not identical, to guidelines published by the American Heart Association' and the European Resuscitation Council. 2 An international liaison committee (including representation from the ARC) is attempting to resolve differences and will in due course publish common advisory statements. The current guidelines are specifically for advanced life support, but some essential techniques of basic life support are presented. Further details of basic life support for infants and children' and specific guidelines for resuscitation of asphyxiated newborn infants have been published. 4,5
