Dengue haemorrhagic fever is a recent and more serious variant of dengue infection, causing significant mortality in children under 14 years of age in South‐East Asia and the Western Pacific regions. Successful treatment depends on early recognition of the disease and careful monitoring of the development of shock. Japanese B encephalitis has a case fatality rate of 10%‐30% in these regions, but may be controlled by vaccination.
