The last 80 years have seen enormous advances in the area ofwomen's health. Perhaps the most important have been the efforts to improve medical standards after the First World War and the development of hormone therapy ‐ specifically, the contraceptive pill, which has hadfar‐reaching effects on women's ability to control their bodies, their fertility and their place in society.
