The last decade has seen the emergence of many new pharmacological agents for treating patients with cardiovascular disorders. In particular, there has been increasing use of agents like angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEI) and calcium channel antagonists (CCA) which have multiple clinical applications. Other recent developments include the availability of well tolerated and effective lipid‐lowering agents, especially the hydroxy methylglutaryl co‐enzyme A (HMG‐CoA) reductase inhibitors. We have also seen an old remedy, aspirin, acquire an important role in the prevention and treatment of arterial thrombosis, and thrombolysis has become established in the management of myocardial infarction. In this article we will cover current trends in the management of the common cardiovascular diseases and discuss the impact of treatments on patient outcome.
