I ntervention programs currently in place for child sexual abuse are many and varied a reflection of the early evolutionary stage of this "new epidemic".' They are characterised primarily by whether they are driven by government legislation, by the corporate advocacy of professional institutions, or by private groups. Unquestionably the success of intervention, in the absence of a hard scientific doctrine on the most effective methods,' depends on the dedication and enthusiasm of individuals working in this distressing and taxing area. Legislative protection of children may be enshrined in Federal law (as in Canada); State or Provincial law (as in France,' and in some States of Australla'"), or in a vigorous mixture of these with input from lay bodies and professional and non-government institutions (as in the United States and in Germany').
