Chromobacterium violaceum is a Gram‐negative organism which normally inhabits water and soil. Human infection is unusual and is associated with a high mortality rate. We describe a typical case of disseminated infection with Chr. violaceum in a male carpet cleaner. The possible origin and treatment of the infection is discussed. (Med J Aust 1989; 150: 720‐721)
