In spite of multiple authoritative reviews in recent years on the subject of neuroleptic malignant syndrome, the association of neuroleptic malignant syndrome with excessive fluid consumption has received little attention. This association is described and comments are made as to its possible origins. Further investigations are required to determine the strength and nature of the association. Such findings may have implications not only for clinical management but also for the poorly‐understood neurochemistry of the neuroleptic malignant syndrome. (Med J Aust 1989; 150: 457‐458)
