We have provided a description of gambling within the Aboriginal population of the Kimberley region. We suggest that rather than being an innocuous pastime, gambling has substantial public‐health impli‐ cations with physical, psychological and social costs. Such consequences as compromised nutrition, impaired parenting and the entrenchment of patterns of resource utilization that are inimical to planned development clearly have an impact that extends widely beyond those who actually hold the cards.
