Intraocular lenses that are made of polymethylmethacrylate also contain . hydroxyphenolbenzotriazole compounds to absorb ultraviolet radiation. The mechanism by which benzophenones absorb ultraviolet light is phototautomerism; ultraviolet light converts the compound to a photoenol and the reaction is then reversed with the emission of heat. 7 The non-dyed Bausch & Lomb H3 soft contact lens absorbs less than 30,70 of shortwavelengthvisibleand ultraviolet light when tested with the Varian DMS90 UV-Visible spectrophotometer. By comparison, the yellow-dyed contact lens has an absorption spectrum with a minimum absorption of 200,70 at 320 nm and a maximum absorption of 800,70 at 400 nm, when tested in the range 300-500 nm (see Figure). Though the absorption of ultraviolet light by the yellowdyed lens is neither total nor exclusive, we believe its benefit to be greater than the potential danger of the partial elimination of the protective effects of pupillary construction by the reduction of visible radiation.
