Since the concept of home‐style birth facilities in hospitals was endorsed by the National Health and Medical Research Council in June, 1978, the implementation of birth centres has been slow. Despite established programmes in Melbourne's Queen Victoria Hospital and the Royal Women's Hospital, success elsewhere has been patchy.
