Pelvic surgery in young women can jeopardise future fertility, because inadvertent”and, in susceptible patients, even trivial” trauma to the fallopian tubes, ovaries, and pelvic peritoneum can produce adhesions that later prevent ovum pickup, ovum transport, and pregnancy. Because pelvic surgery is presently being practised by gynaecological and general surgeons and by general practitioners, the indications for, and techniques of, pelvic surgery in young women are critically re‐examined in this article.
