have not previously been reported although Henderson' described synovitis of the knee joint in a number of patients w ith this condition. O'Duffy2 demonstrated abnormal scintograms, particularly in the shoulder joint, in 25 patients with polymyalgia rheumatica. Coombs and Sharp' produced proximal limb pain by injecting normal saline into the acromioclavicular, sterno clavicular, manubriosternal joints and interspinous ligaments. These authors suggested that this syndrome is probably a form of arthritis affecting predominantly the spine and limb girdles. The arthroscopic findings in the shoulders, reported in this letter, support our clinical impression that much of the pain in polymyalgia rheumatica is, in fact, due to joint inflammation rather than other hypothetical causes.
