A survey of undergraduates at the University of New South Wales revealed that 28% of males and 23% of females currently smoked. Smoking rate was not related to students' sex, age, year of study or domestic circumstances, but did vary significantly across faculties. Smoking rate among undergraduates appeared lower than among students' age‐peers in the Australian population. Concerning alcohol consumption. 92% of males and 96% of females currently drank. Drinking rate was not related to students' sex. age, year of study, domestic circumstances or faculty, though frequency of drinking and amount of alcohol consumed per drinking occasion were higher among males. There was also a significant relationship between smoking and drinking habits.
