Over a period of five and a half years, 222 cases of gastric cancer have been documented at the Princess Alexandra Hospital. Abdominal pain and weight loss were the most common presenting features. Twenty‐three per cent of patients had clinical evidence of metastases at presentation. Routine barium‐meal X‐ray examinations gave positive results in 57% of patients in this group, and showed no abnormalities in 22%; while in 21% the lesions were reported as benign. However, the results of endoscopy with biopsy examinations were positive in 88.4% of cases. Four early gastric cancers were found in this group.
