SIR: In New South Wales in the years from 1973 to 1977 there were 162 suicidal deaths from domestic gas poisoning, whereas in the whole of the rest of Australia there were only 19. Table 1 compares numbers of suicides using this method in New South Wales and the rest of Australia since 1962. During the 1970s, there has been a considerable fall in the rate of suicide by domestic gas. However, this decrease has not been nearly so great in New South Wales as in the rest of Australia. Of Australian domestic gas suicides in the last two years, 83% occurred in the Sydney statistical division; 7% of Sydney suicides (contrasting with less than 1% of suicides elsewhere in New South Wales) were by this means.
