The need for a more critical appraisal of calipers, braces and “irons” worn by patients with musculoskeletal disorders of the lower limb is emphasized. This appraisal should be done not only by the general practitioner who treats such patients, but also by those who prescribe such apparatus. The common use of the heel ferrule is deplored.
