Finally, with regard to the development of patterns of breathing to control pain, though there are few who would dispute the value of this measure, there are many who would insist that hyperventilation be excluded from the pattern. The physiotherapists of my acquaintance teach their patients to avoid the hypocarbia which comes from hyperventilation by taking shallow breaths or breathing into cupped hands when they breathe rapidly, and by breathing slowly when they take deep breaths, while Pierre Vellay, one of the earliest advocates of psychoprophylaxis, wrote of the need to avoid overbreathing.t?
