BRIAN CONNOR, On behalfof the staff members of the Armidale and New EnglandHospital. alleviate acne vulgaris, is not fully correct, bearing in mind the substantialrole that zinc plays in normal formation of skin collagen and keratin, and theepidermaldefects which occur in zinc-deficient experimentalanimalswhich are all reversed on repletion. A logical therapy for acne vulgaris is becomingapparent. It is as follows: (i) ashort course, if necessary, of tetracycline to c ntrol infection; and (ii)administrationof zinc sulphate(approximately100 mg/day) at night (and not with cereal food) which is continuedintermittently during the period of high zinc demand. No tetracycline should beadministeredduring this phase. In view of mineral interaction,a higher daily dose of zinc sulphate would be inadvisable. In teenagers, 100 mg of zinc sulphate is approximately equivalent to their dailyrequirement of zinc. It seems logical to combine the zinc with vitamin C which also has a role in maturationof skin collagen. 3 UrungaPlace, J. C. FITZHERBERT. Wollongong,N.S.W. 2500.
