Mitral valve prolapse was demonstrated by echocardiography in 73 patients. There was a spectrum of abnormal mitral valve echo contours, ranging from “late systolic” to “pansystolic” patterns of prolapse. Contrary to earlier expectations, these patterns did not correspond to the auscultatory findings of a systolic‐click/ late‐systolic‐murmur syndrome and pansystolic murmur respectively. The likely explanation for these findings is that different echo contours can be generated, depending on which portion of the prolapsing valve is traversed by the ultrasonic beam.
