In 1972 a survey of 250 Aboriginal children, aged five to fourteen years, from the rural town of Bourke, N.S.W., was undertaken to identify those with a behaviour disorder. At least one frequent and persistent disorder of behaviour was found in 28% of the boys and 35% of the girls. Severe psychological disturbance was found in 80% of the children. Some factors contributing to these findings are discussed and ways are suggested to help improve the mental health of these children.
