In a pilot trial a simple method of relaxation training was evaluated in the management of patients with chronic headache. The trial included 13 patients suffering from tension headache, eight suffering from migraine and four who were subject to both forms of headache. The course of relaxation therapy consisted of four 20‐minute sessions held at weekly intervals, and patients were instructed to continue practising relaxation daily at home. Six months after the conclusion of the course, 18 patients out of the total of 25 reported substantial improvement, six being headache‐free and 13 subject to less than half the previous frequency of attacks. Over the same period of time, 17 of the 25 patients either reduced or dispensed with their medication.
