A total of 21 cases of falciparum malaria, 14 of which were resistant to treatment with chloroquine or quinine or both, were treated with a combination of 500 mg of sulfadoxine and 25 mg of pyrimethamine, known as Fansidar. Results were good in 17 cases, parasitaemia usually clearing in two to three days or less, and the temperature subsiding in one or two days. In two cases (Cases 11 and 21) parasitaemia continued although the fever subsided. In the third case (Case 13), that of a patient who was also suffering from typhoid fever, a relapse of parasitaemia occurred on the third day after treatment with Fansidar, and the temperature began to rise. The fourth patient (Case 21) failed to respond at all In so far as the parasitaemia occurred, but the temperature became normal.
