A controlled clinical trial was carried out to determine the effectiveness of carbenoxolone sodium in the treatment of Chinese patients with gastric ulceration. Of 17 control cases with corpus gastric ulcer, nine showed complete healing, three considerable healing, two slight healing, and three no healing of the ulcer. In the group of 15 cases with corpus gastric ulcer given carbenoxolone, only one had complete healing, six considerable healing, six slight healing and two no healing of the ulcer. Thus, the control group appears to have had better results than the group given carbenoxolone sodium. This difference was statistically significant. In cases with prepyloric gastric ulceration, no significant difference was found between the control group and the group given carbenoxolone sodium. It is concluded that carbenoxolone sodium has no beneficial effect in the treatment of gastric ulceration in Chinese subjects.
